After confirming his sexual orientation in a series of interviews over the weekend, Michael Sam could be the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL. The media provided heavy coverage of this revelation, but is it really that big of a deal? Does it really matter?
“No. It doesn’t,” declared Morning Answer co-host Ben Shapiro. “The fact that the media thinks it matters demonstrates the media’s true agenda here.” He went on to say that he has yet to hear one person say that he won’t be able to play because he’s gay. “The fact is that it shouldn’t be a big deal when somebody comes out in America anymore considering that we’ve been doing this routine for 35 years, 40 years at this point!”
Ben continued. “The idea that the media is making this a major issue speaks to the fact that the media thinks of the American people as a bunch of bigots. The only reason why you would make this an issue is that if you really think he’s a ‘Jackie Robinson-like’ figure who’s facing down enormous discrimination and so it’s a big deal because otherwise, why would we be doing this routine?” He then rattled off a bunch of gay “firsts” and then finished by pointing out media “don’t want to let this stuff go. The minute they let this stuff go, and acknowledge that America is actually a deeply tolerant…it takes away the idea that Americans are a bad group of folks. And, if Americans are not a bad group of folks, then why exactly would you vote for the left?”
Brian Whitman came back by saying that Ben was making a lot of sound for “not caring.” “The tone with which you don’t care seems to defy that you don’t care,” spotlighted Brian. “Do you understand what I mean?”
“I get what you’re saying,” responded Ben, “What I think is mistaken about that is what I do care about is when the media portrays us all as a bunch of bigots. That’s what I care about… The fact is that he did this at the University of Missouri…Missouri is a deeply bible belt kind of state. The idea that he would do this at the University of Missouri and nobody would give a darn. That speaks to the fact---”
“But that bothers the media,” interjected Elisha Krauss. “People not giving a darn almost bothers the media more than if the people…would say ‘Oh, we hate him for it.’”
