Santa Monica continues to explore banning fitness trainers from using public parks. The current proposal is to ban any classes over two people and impose an extra 15% fee for all the trainers.
Exercise instructor Sonki Hong told Reason TV, “we’re already paying for business license, permit, insurance, and we’re paying city tax every year so on top of that we have to pay a[n] extra 15 percent.”
Morning Answer co-host Ben Shapiro commented, “They will tax you excessively if you do business in a private place. They will tax you excessively if you do business in a public place.” “When will the city start to crack down on sign spinners?” he wondered.
Co-host Brian Whitman pointed out tounge-in-cheek, “It turns out some physical exercise in Santa Monica on the beach is fine… if it involves free weights – that’s not allowed. Any other way you want to burn off excess calories, go for it! Especially if the sun has set and no one is around.”
Heidi Harris also commented that other types of “commerce” go on in the park they don’t want to tax – obviously referring to illegal drug activity.
