Cleanup efforts are underway after a water main break shot nearly 10 million gallons of water onto the streets of West LA. The break happened yesterday afternoon and it took utility officials three hours to cap the over 90-year-old water main, but not until after a giant sink hole had opened up on Sunset Boulevard.
The millions of gallons flooded part of the UCLA campus, and left a couple of inches of standing water in the newly renovated Pauley Pavilion and a nearby athletic field. Tractors, backhoes, and big rigs carrying material will be in and out of the neighborhood for most of the day today as crews work to clean up the muddy mess.
Sunset Blvd is expcted to be closed throughout the day between Veteran and Hilgard. In addtion, Charles E Young Dr is closed between Westwood Plaza and Royce Dr. Students and visitors are asked to please access the campus from the south side and visitors may park in structures 2 and 3.
