5 Freeway Tanker Truck Crash Leads to "Long Term" Closure

The 5 freeway remains closed in Elysian Park while crews work to repair damage from a tanker truck fire.

The crash happened around 10:30am on Sunday morning when a tire blew on a truck hauling 8,500 gallons of fuel.  The heat of the fire vaporized the truck as well as severly damaged the freeway and underpass.

Two southbond lanes are open on the 5, but all nortbound lanes are closed.  Officials do not have an estimate for reopening and are only saying the closure is "long term."
