Susan Shelley is asking for a recount in the razor-thin election of Assembly District 45, which covers the west San Fernando Valley.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Shelley said that she was asking the County Registrar/Recorder's office for an explanation of a discrepancy of 206 more votes counted than were available to count. Although she says that the questions may be cleared up quickly, out of "an abundance of caution" she requested the recount before the deadline of 5:00pm Tuesday.
She went on to explain:
During my investigation of the election returns, I discovered that over 1,800 vote-by-mail ballots that were logged in as “returned” and included in the county’s vote-by-mail reports were actually undeliverable ballots that had been returned by the U.S. Postal Service. I believe this should be investigated further to see if this was the result of errors by the USPS or whether these voters should be removed from the voter rolls.
Republican Shelley lost to Democrat Matt Dababneh by just 329 votes in a district that is overwhelmingly Democratic, surprising both parties and political pundits. Ever since the polls closed, Republican representatives have been keeping a close watch on the ballots.
